Description

"Matriarchal Design Futures" introduces a transformative pedagogical framework that prioritizes caregiving and nurturing practices, moving away from capitalist and hierarchical structures. This inclusive approach welcomes individuals of all identities—caregivers, mothers, non-mothers, women, men, and nonbinary people—while challenging the values of white supremacy and capitalism. It emphasizes collectivism over individualism, cooperation over competition, inclusivity over elitism, and human rights over profit. In this framework, success is not defined by metrics or scorekeeping. This speculative imaginary seeks to elevate identities and agency beyond traditional heteropatriarchal binaries, reshaping our work, communication, and vision for the future of design in educational and professional settings. Led by two women educators and industry practitioners, this project presents research and fosters collaboration in developing matriarchal principles for design leadership, teaching, and learning, aiming to inspire a hopeful collective vision for the future. The purpose of exploring design futures is not to provide definitive answers but to enhance awareness, bring visibility to the overlooked, and spark meaningful dialogue. The "Matriarchal Design Futures: Workbook" and associated workshops create a supportive space for unlearning and growth, encouraging diverse participation in co-creating restorative futures through collective inquiry. Participants will contribute to an open-source publication that outlines holistic principles for an inclusive, anti-exceptional design future. This initiative offers tools for provocation and reflection, inviting everyone to reimagine and collaboratively shape a better world.
